Andrew Vallance-Owen

Andrew Vallance-Owen trained as a surgeon but moved into management and policy areas when he became Medical Director of the Bupa Group in 1994. In the late 90s, he established the first programme in the UK routinely measuring PROMs – in what were then Bupa Hospitals.

The Department of Health started the National PROMs Programme in 2009; Andrew was asked to chair the Programme’s Stakeholder Group. He became Chair of the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) in 2014; private hospitals and their consultants are under a legal mandate from the Competition and Markets Authority to measures PROMs for certain procedures and send the results to PHIN for publication.
